The title of the exhibition is a reference to the genre of the conversation pieces, which typically consisted of group portraits. Often such paintings portrayed interaction with objects or persons connected in some way to science or art. The term has more recently acquired a new meaning, referring instead to objects that serve as the topic of conversation, things that are sufficiently interesting, contradictory or complex.
The exhibition by the Finnish visual artist Jani Ruscica (b. 1978) consists of parts of his recent multimedia work-in-process titled Conversation in Pieces (2013–). For the exhibition, Ruscica commissioned among other things a music box based on a Soviet animated film from the 1970s. The box is also an allegory that reflects the workings of the political system.
Jani Ruscica spent his early childhood in Italy. After attending an art high school in Savonlinna, Finland, he studied sculpture and moving image in London, and subsequently at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Ruscica has exhibited his work at international film festivals, at MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Ruscica received the AVEK Award of the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture in 2010.
