23 September 2012 marked the centenary of the birth of American artist Tony Smith (1912–1980). Friedrich Meschede, director of Kunsthalle Bielefeld, took this as an opportunity to create a comprehensive retrospective.
Initially, Smith worked as an architect, but from the age of fifty onward devoted himself exclusively to the sculpture medium. He is regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the 1960s. His two daughters Kiki Smith (b. 1954) and Seton Smith (b. 1955) are also artists. Both Kiki Smith’s works (sculptures, stained glass, tapestries, etc.) and Seton Smith’s photographs have subtle links to their father’s œuvre. The show at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein features around 120 artworks.
