SEBASTIAN GRÄFE
Die weiteren Aussichten
21 May - 10 July, 2011

The weather is not only one of the most popular topics of conversation, it is also one of man’s most stubborn adversaries. It impinges on all realms of life and yet eschews all control. The only possibility of largely avoiding its influence is to categorically exclude it. Sebastian Gräfe however opts for a contrary course in his exhibition Die weiteren Aussichten: he brings the weather right into the room. There is no escaping it. Using the principle of the weather station or weather column, he transfers its function to architectural components of the exhibition space and the objects in it. He conceives a measuring and display system for air pressure, temperature and weather forecast which has a key of its very own and fits in both formally and conceptually with Gräfe’s other work. At the same time he exposes the exhibition space to phenomena that apparently stand for total freedom or boundlessness and make the walls of the Künstlerhaus Bremen permeable.
Sebastian Gräfe (*1976 in Grimma) received the 30th Bremen Fine Arts Prize in 2006. In the years that followed scholarships brought him to Stuhr-Heiligenrode or Edenkoben. He had solo exhibitions among others at the Kunstverein Cuxhaven, Galerie Lena Brüning, Zern Berlin, Kunstverein St. Pauli and the Simultanhalle Köln.
