The concept of “possible worlds” (in German: mögliche Welten) appears in the fields of logic, semantics, and philosophy and is used to make statements about possibility and necessity. Artists, for their part, are often credited with creating their own “worlds,” or at least ideas of how our current world might otherwise be. They draw on interior and exterior worlds, on the imaginary and reality to process the present. They make use of archives and memories, go on excursions and treasure hunts, develop plans and narratives; they focus and quote, they expose and conceal, deploying diverse media and genres. Their designs, whether utopian or dystopian, challenge our ways of seeing. And perhaps the possible worlds by the selected twenty-three artistic positions provide us with the appropriate tools to imagine new–necessary–worlds together. And what better moment for this than now?
