During the winter of 2014/2015 the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, in collaboration with the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau, Switzerland, will present a retrospective of the works of Sophie Taueber-Arp; this will be the first comprehensive exhibition of her art in a long time. Born in 1889 in Davos, Taueber-Arp fell victim to a tragic accident and died in Zurich on January 13, 1943. She is one of the most important artists of the first half of the twentieth century, having sought interdisciplinary forms of expression through painting, dance, architecture, and design. For a long while her art was overshadowed by the work of her husband, Hans Arp. Like him, she was also active in the DADA movement in Zurich in the 1920s. The couple moved to France in 1926, where she was a major contributor to the development of so-called Concrete Art, as it was formulated in Paris in the 1930s.
Most of Taueber-Arp’s work is in Switzerland; a significant permanent loan of her artworks was made a while ago to the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau. Among them are design objects, so this particular collaboration offers a special opportunity to exhibit new aspects of Taueber-Arp’s oeuvre, such as handmade objects, design, and dance, as well as previously unknown documents pertaining to her body of work.
After the comprehensive Sonia Delaunay retrospective in 2008, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld’s exhibition of the works of Sophie Taeuber-Arp is a continuation of the thematic series on the works of the great twentieth-century female artists. An extensive catalogue in German and English will accompany the show.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Kunststiftung NRW and the Stiftung der Sparkasse Bielefeld.
