Swedish installation artist Matts Leiderstam has a keen interest in 19th-century landscape painting. After conducting extensive research, he uses slide projections, computer animations, optical instruments and his own paintings and drawings to open up new perspectives on historical motifs and compositions. Leiderstam's exhibitions, which he usually designs for specific venues, are frequently reminiscent of archives or historical painting collections. For his solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle, entitled Seen From Here, he has conducted thorough research in local museums and archives and traced the steps of artists in the 19th-century Dьsseldorf school. The show at the Kunsthalle will partly overlap with the Schirmer Project 2010, which is devoted to the work and times of landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and in which five museums for the region will participate in addition to museum kunst palast. After its run in Dьsseldorf, the Matts Leiderstam exhibition will be shown at the Malmц Art Museum in Sweden (from June to September 2010) and at the Turku Art Museum in Finland (from October 2010 to January 2011).
