Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary presents The Soundmaker and Stunned Man , both co-produced with Rumi Verjee, London. The project is supported by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds, das werk, Berlin and Arri Film & TV, Munich, in co-operation with Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin.
Julian Rosefeldt, a film and video artist residing in Berlin, will present the first two parts of his new work Trilogy of failure. Rosefeldt's works are inspired by the organisation of everyday life and its corresponding stereotypes. In his scenic video installations, Rosefeldt creates a sense of alienation and hyperbole through his depiction of the structures, mechanisms, routines and rituals from which individual and social quotidian existence is derived.
Both video installations, The Soundmaker and Stunned Man, depict fictitious portraits that are as precise as they are prone to falling into the absurd. The characters are trapped in conversation with their alter-egos. The dialogues are equally unconscious and obsessive, with each character acting as Sisyphus in his own universe. These allegorical psychological portraits are reflected in the multi-layered, formal construction of the video installation, which alludes to films such as The Truman Show. Rosefeldt's characters are sensorial machines, the archetypes that fathom the borders of the possible, the rational and the worldly: the stuntman through his unleashed body language, the soundmaker with his 'hearing' eyes and his 'seeing' ears.
