Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy?
LIAF 2013 was curated by Anne Szefer Karlsen (Norway), Eva Gonzalez-Sancho (Spain), and Bassam El Baroni (Egypt).
By paraphrasing the title of Richard Hamilton’s famous collage from 1956, “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing”, the curators posed a significant question: what is it that makes today so familiar, yet simultaneously seem so uneasy? LIAF 2013 explored changing social and economic conditions in today’s world.
The curators tied this theme in quite concrete ways to the local community by taking into use residential houses, shops, and public spaces in Svolvær and Kabelvåg. Works by 26 international artists were presented in 12 exhibition venues, each vastly different in character, among them a garage, a fire lot, a library, a boat shed, a hotel room, a shopping center, a fishery, an AmCar club, a movie theatre, a war museum, and an anchorage in the Kabelvåg harbor. Most of the works had been commissioned to LIAF 2013, several of them were site specific works.
In advance of the exhibition, a series of happenings called “inserts” were arranged. These were mediation platforms in the form of meetings, lectures, work shops, publications in local newspapers, all of which introduced LIAF’s theme and the questions it asked to the local audience.
A seminar during the opening weekend reflected on the questions asked in the curatorial concept. The lecturers were Matthew Fuller, Aaron Levy, Aaron Schuster, Tiago Bom, and Ayatagli Tuleubek.
The participating artists in LIAF 2013 were Bani Abidi (Pakistan), Sven Augustijnen (Belgium), Ann Böttcher (Sweden), Mircea Cantor (Romania), István Csákány (Romania), HC Gilje (Norway), Pedro Gómez-Egaña (Colombia), Shilpa Gupta (India), Leslie Hewitt in collaboration with Bradford Young (USA), David Horvitz (USA), Adelita Husni-Bey (Italia), Siniša Ilić (Serbia), Adrià Julià (Spain), Mahmoud Khaled (Egypt), Karl Larsson (Sweden), Laida Lertxundi (Spain), Britta Marakatt-Labba (Sweden), Nana Oforiatta Ayim (Ghana), Oliver Ressler (Austria), Allen Ruppersberg (USA), Walid Sadek (Lebanon), Natascha Sadr Haghighian (Iran), Lisa Tan (USA), Olivier Zabat (France), Knut Åsdam (Norway).
