LISBET FERNANDEZ

THE CHILD IS THE EXPRESSION VE...

The child is the expression vehicle used in the installations of Lisbet Fernández (Camagüey, Cuba, 1974). The child represents to her the paradigm of the human condition with the implied sublimation and monstrosity.

Fernandez works with terracotta as her key material, providing a sense of fragility in one hand, and the strength of the expression of her pieces as an important part of the conceptual meaning of her work. The earth as a primal material maintains its permanence with purity and strength, remaining intact and eternal as long as not attacked, or intervened, the same as the tender flesh of a child rising before a world full of possibilities and risks.

Her installations play with tension, as shown in the attached installation "Silence...Silence", 2003. Depicting three life-size children finding harbor in three transparent vinyl umbrellas, the artificial appearance of safety and the obvious vulnerability are emblematic of the anguish of the contemporary reality.
