This summer a large-scale presentation of works from the Louisiana Collection is on show. A variety of media such as painting, sculpture, photography, video and more conceptual categories such as ’caviar painting’ can be experienced in the museum’s South Wing.
Though one can find aesthetic, thematic and historical similarities between the works on show, each of them are addictive artworks in their own right. They are highlights from the collection, which can be experienced for the first time or revisited to explore new details and perspectives. The presentation is structured as a reverse chronology with contemporary art first - followed by classics from the 20th century.
From the German post-war period a selection of works from artists such as Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, A. R. Penck and Georg Baselitz is included. From the other side of the Atlantic different American Pop Art positions are displayed with paintings by e.g. Roy Lichtenstein, Malcolm Morley and Andy Warhol. The presentation also includes works from modern art history classics, such as Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Alberto Giacometti and Louise Bourgeois.
Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset's photography ’When a Country Falls in Love With Itself’ (2008) is the first work one is greeted by in the hanging. Here the iconic Copenhagen statue The Little Mermaid is staged as glancing at her reflection. The selection of contemporary works also includes works by the younger German photographer generation: Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Thomas Demand. Where of Demand’s stunning and stringently constructed photography ‘Lichtung’ is on view, depicting an illuminated forest clearing made entirely of paper and cardboard.
Finally, Georg Herold's ’caviar painting’, painted with the luxury gastronomy product, is a work that at the same time is a critical commentary on the work of art as value and elegantly reflects the abundance of impressions that this summer collection presentation offers.
