Portraits of Artists
07 Jan - 04 Feb 2006
A selection of photographic works from the collection
of Rex Capital, Rhode Island
January 7 - February 4, 2006
Luhring Augustine, in collaboration with Olivier Renaud-Clement, is pleased to present an exhibition of over 120 vintage and contemporary photographic works depicting images of artists.
The photographs that make up this exhibition represent a selection from the Rex Capital collection, an American collection that has brought together close to 700 objects dating from 1850 to the present. The focus of this selection is the ‘artist portrait', an idea which is explored in its many permutations. Employing wide-ranging technical and formal approaches, the artists in this exhibit train the lens on themselves and each other. Tending away from pure document or pure aesthetics, these images examine the varied notions of ‘artist' and portraiture. The images are as often humorous and experimental, as they are disturbing and psychological. The iconic status of the artist personality is both revered and subverted; the individuals exposed and obscured.
This exhibition includes works by Berenice Abbott, Vito Acconci, Richard Avedon, Constantin Brancusi, Sophie Calle, Chuck Close, Larry Clark, Hollis Frampton, Adam Fuss, Jacob Hilsdorf, Candida Höfer, Allan Kaprow, Helen Levitt, Glenn Ligon, Fred W. McDarrah, Felix Nadar, Arnold Newman, Dennis Oppenheim, Ed Ruscha, Lucas Samaras, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Gillian Wearing, Garry Winogrand, and many more.
