APORIAS OF LOVE
12TH LECTURE AT THE BIJLMER SPINOZA-FESTIVAL: MAY 13, 2009
BY MARCUS STEINWEG
Love is the tension between reality and it’s removal, between the excess of fantasy and traumatizing violence. In love, we all experience the threat, where he or she, the other, keeps slipping away or in fact slips away or disappears. In the experience of the other one encounters this other in its difference and ungraspability. He is always too much, he is necessarily overstraining. It appears to be the condition of love and encounter that the other is unseizable. Meaning: Love and encounter only exist as failure, aporia, or catastrophical event.
