The exhibition Vertical Thinking rotates around the installation The Refusal of Time, produced on the occasion of Documenta 13 in Kassel and presented in Italy for the first time at MAXXI.
Reconfigured for the spaces of the museum’s Gallery 5, the powerful, embracing and suggestive installation is an explosion of music, images and Chinese shadows, with a pulsing Leonardesque machine at the centre.
The Refusal of Time was born out of a long-term reflection on the concept of time developed by William Kentridge together with the physicist and scientific historian Peter L. Gallison and has been realised in collaboration with the composer Philip Miller and with Catherine Meyburgh with regard to the video processing and editing. Dada Masilo worked on the choreographies.
In this work, specifically reconfigured for the museum spaces and in dialogue with various works from the MAXXI collection, the spectator is completely immersed in a discourse that is at once epic and fable-like, cosmic and terrestrial.
The narration is a dance composed of shadows in movement in which the artist himself appears and disappears, traversing the space of imaginary geographical maps. The work thus proposes a universal reflection on time that is refracted in the traversing of places and in the lives of individuals, following the various terrestrial time zones, from dawns to dusks, until it comes together in a cosmic whole.
