Kiefer perceives an experimental character in books, seeing in them notes, something preliminary and intimate. His books are always unique and reveal a close relationship with painted artwork and sculpture. Kiefer prefers to base his designs on simple groundwood paper, scraps of wallpaper and charred canvas. Traces of contamination, decomposition and flames document the transience of the image – and the memories it seeks to preserve.
