The Art Prize of the Leipziger Volkszeitung will be awarded for the 10th time in 2013. The prize-winner Sebastian Nebe (*1982) studied at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts from 2005 to 2012 and was a student in the Astrid Klein masterclasses. He now lives and works in Berlin.
Sebastian Nebe's paintings spirit onlookers away into faraway places, into hidden crannies of the woods or abandoned huts that have long since lost their original function and are left to rot as the waste of civilisation. For a few years now human beings have disappeared from the world of motifs that Nebe draws on, but the places he depicts lie waiting for visitors. Indeed despite the graphic stringency and coloristic chill the large-format paintings in oil on paper act like tractor beams on the onlookers. Sebastian Nebe often combines paintings with objects: Discarded garden furniture is found in images and also as three-dimensional objects in front, functioning as bridges between the real and illusionary spaces.
