STRING THEORY: FOCUS ON CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN ART

‘string theory’ is a scientific term that speculates on the theory of everything. In this exhibition, we take it to mean the open-ended expansion and connections of ideas, stories and techniques.
See extraordinary pieces from a diverse range of Aboriginal artists working with expanded notions of textile and craft traditions. From sculpture to photography, painting to video.
Curated by MCA Senior Curator, Glenn Barkley, the work of over 30 artists and artist groups, many of whom will be new to audiences, is featured. Artworks made especially for this exhibition include Yukuwa (Feather string yam vine) by Frances Djulibing and one hundred metres of hand-made string by artists from Yirrkala.
Presented in the largest exhibition space on Level 3, string theory will include its very own shop, giving you the opportunity to take home the works of exhibiting artists as well as a range or work by other makers.
Artists included in string theory are: Tony Albert, Jean Baptiste Apuatimi , Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Art & Culture Studio, Frances Djulibing, Robyn Djunginy, Lola Greeno, Dale Harding, Evelyn McGreen, Lipaki Marlyapa, Dhundhunga 2 Munungurr, Noongar Doll Makers, Laurie Nilsen, Alison Page, Regina Pilawuk Wilson, Jimmy Pike, Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, Tasmanian Shell Necklace Makers, Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Vicki West, Yirrkala Printmakers
