The exhibition draws inspiration from the image of an ancient “landing”, that of Noah’s Ark on Mount Ararat, to explore the concepts of Heimat and homeland in the light of the current situation in Europe, where globalization and immigration are highlighting the fragility of democracies and liberal values, while populist forces are undermining the foundations of politics and society. The show presents works, videos, documents and publications and uses a dialectical structure to forge a dialogue between different, sometimes opposing concepts and values.
The exhibition is preceded by five micro-exhibitions in Museion Passage, showing five new artists’ books around which Degiorgis is planning related events in the local area, in places connected to the themes of the books.
Nicolò Degiorgis (Bolzano, 1985) studied Oriental languages at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and in Beijing, and teaches artistic photography at the University of Bolzano and in the city’s prisons. He is the founder of the publishing house Rorhof and curator at the foto-forum gallery in Bolzano. He has had several exhibitions in institutions and taken part in national and international art events. His book “Hidden Islam” earned him the prize for best book at the renowned Festival Recontres d’Arles in 2014.
