The Bends

The multi-part videowork "The Bends" uses video as a means of navigating through the numerous, various, simultaneous layers of everyday perception and feeling. The movie in 11 chapters without chronology was collaboratively produced between Canada, Germany, Brazil, YouTube, Portugal, Morocco, and the United States of America and is an attempt to scuba dive from sense to meaning and back again. With this episode Andrew de Freitas follows the virtual reality instalment presented at the Kunstverein during the exhibition “New Frankfurt Internationals: Solid Signs” one year previously, culminating in sporadical live projections and the launch of a website.
Andrew de Freitas (*1986, Auckland, New Zealand) is a student of Peter Fischli and Simon Starling at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Previously, he studied fine arts and philosophy at University of Auckland, University of Toronto as well as Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinéma in Montréal. His artwork employs a range of mediums in the exploration of issues arising from everyday perception and the formation of meaning and feeling. Central to his practice is the rearrangement of sensory data and experimentation with expanded methods of production and the narrative form. He has presented works internationally in diverse exhibition and screening contexts. He is currently living and working in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, as a participant in the CAPACETE initiative.
