The exhibition explores utopian concepts and forms of communal life and discusses the extent to which architecture and space are entwined with the division and valuation of domestic work and carework.
“The private is political.” This feminist proposition is the starting point of and motivation for the critical examination of different forms of domesticity, also in regard to the gender-specific coding of the private home as a normative order of the family.
“Domestic Utopias” features artistic positions that deal with different concepts of dwelling. They elucidate, in particular, forms of relationship and divisions of labour as well as the potentials and limits of different forms of living. The exhibition brings the social aspect of habitation to the fore.
