On October 12, Palais de Tokyo presents an exhibition conceived by Tino Sehgal (born in Great Britain in 1976, lives in Berlin). The second of a series of “carte blanche” shows – interventions by artists covering the entirety of the 13,000m2 exhibition space of Palais de Tokyo – begun by Philippe Parreno in 2013. For this show, which is as radical as it is intense, and whose main materials will be human, in a metamorphosed Palais de Tokyo, Tino Sehgal is presenting his works alongside pieces by other artists he has chosen to invite.
The exhibition, Tino Sehgal’s most extensive to date, brings together a selection of his major works, shaped around the labyrinthine architecture of Palais de Tokyo. The works merge and interact with each other, in ways the artist began to experiment with at Berlin’s Martin Gropius Bau in 2015, and earlier this year in Marrakech 2016, thus creating a new level of complexity for his projects.
Tino Sehgal challenges conventional museum exhibition precepts by placing a central focus on social interaction, rather than the inanimate object. His artworks are brought into existence through human capacities such as dance, speech and song, and are present during the entire opening hours of the show (from 12 October to 18 December). Often involving the visitors, each work has its own specific emotional and aesthetic nature.

A few days before the opening of his “carte blanche” at Palais de Tokyo, Tino Sehgal is for the first time collaborating with the dancers of the Ballet of the Opéra de Paris. Striking up a resonance with the performances of choreographic works by William Forsythe, Justin Peck and Crystal Pite, Tino Sehgal is staging four of his pieces in the public spaces of the Palais Garnier.

Tino Sehgal (né en 1976 à Londres, vit à Berlin) a étudié l’économie politique à Berlin ainsi que la danse à la Folkwang University of the Arts d’Essen en Allemagne. Son travail a été montré dans le cadre de nombreuses expositions personnelles à travers le monde au cours de ces dernières années, dont celles, tout particulièrement remarquées, qui ont eu lieu au Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, à New York (2010) et dans le Turbine Hall de la Tate Modern, à Londres (2012) ; ainsi que celles organisées par Le Van Abbemuseum, à Eindhoven (2004), le Stedelijk Museum, à Amsterdam (2006, 2015), l’Institute of Contemporary Arts, à Londres (2005, 2006, 2007), la Galleria d’Arte Moderna, à Milan (2008), le Walker Art Center, à Minneapolis (2007), le MMK, à Francfort (2007), l’Aubette 1928, avec les Musées de la Ville de Strasbourg (2010), le Kunstnernes Hus, à Oslo (2011), l’Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, à Beijing (2013), la Pinacoteca de São Paulo (2014), le CCBB, à Rio de Janeiro (2014) et le Martin Gropius Bau, à Berlin (2015). En 2016, on a notamment pu voir son œuvre à Marrakech, sur la place Jemaa el-Fna, au Staatliche Kunstsammlungen de Dresde, et dans le cadre du festival ImPulsTanz, à Vienne. Il a participé à la Biennale de Venise en 2003 et en 2005 (il partage alors le Pavillon allemand avec Thomas Scheibitz), qui lui a décerné son Lion d’Or du meilleur artiste en 2013. Il a été finaliste du Turner Prize cette même année. Il a également participé à la Biennale de Berlin en 2006, à la Triennale de Yokohama en 2008, à la Biennale de Gwangju en 2010 et à la Documenta de Kassel en 2012.
