The False Prophet

Peres Projects announces the first solo exhibition of the Dutch artist Folkert De Jong in Germany, entitled "Der Falsche Prophet", a new installation of life-sized figurative sculptures made out of styrofoam and polyurethane plastic.
"Der Falsche Prophet" represents the last scene of a story about a game between good and evil. The dice have broken to pieces, the house-of-cards has fallen; game over. Central to the installation is a 19th century carriage with stained glass windows. On top of it sits a man with long hair and a beard, holding a ship model of the Spanish Armada: a reference to an age where the colonization of the planet was rapidly accelerating, almost every corner of the world had been discovered, and a large part converted to Christianity. Barricaded with wood, doors, old books, helmets and furniture, the horseless carriage stands still in the middle of what looks like a pile of junk. Emerging out of the chaos of these objects and hypnotically turning around their axis, caricatured human heads – chopped off and put on stakes – remain like monuments to what were once glorious players.
With his work Folkert De Jong evokes events from the past that reflect upon the present. His sculptures are monumental in scale yet, at the same time, constructed from fragile and ordinary materials.
Folkert De Jong was born in Alkmaar, the Netherlands in 1972. He attended the Rijks Academy for Visual Arts, Amsterdam and took third prize in 2003 for the Prix de Rome for Sculpture in the Netherlands.
"Der Falsche Prophet" will be on view at Peres Projects Berlin (Schlesische Str. 26, Berlin-Kreuzberg) through March 3, 2007. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Javier Peres präsentiert die erste Einzelausstellung des holländischen Künstlers Folkert De Jong in Deutschland. Die Ausstellung "Der falsche Prophet" besteht aus einer neuen Installation aus lebensgroßen figurativen Skulpturen aus Styropor und Polyurethanplastik.
"Der falsche Prophet" stellt die letzte Szene in einer Geschichte über das Spiel zwischen gut und böse dar. Die Würfel sind zerstückelt, das Kartenhaus ist heruntergefallen: Game over. Eine Kutsche aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit Fenstern aus Buntglas steht im Zentrum der Installation. Darauf sitzt ein Mann mit langen Haaren und einem Bart, der ein Schiffmodel der spanischen Armada in den Armen hält: ein Verweis auf eine Zeit, in der sich die Kolonisation des Planeten beschleunigte. Eine Zeit, in der alle Ecken der Welt entdeckt, und ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung zum Christentum bekehrt wurde. Verriegelt mit Holz, Türen, alten Büchern, Helmen und Möbeln steht die Kutsche ohne Pferd mitten in einem scheinbaren Schrotthaufen. Karikaturen von enthaupteten und gepfählten Menschenköpfen tauchen auf aus diesem Chaos und und wirbeln wie hynotisiert herum, als seien sie Überbleibsel eines Denkmals einstweilig glorreicher Akteure.
Mit seinem Werk ruft Folkert De Jong Vorgänge der Vergangenheit hervor, die die Gegenwart reflektieren. Seine Skulpturen haben eine monumentale Größe und sind zugleich aus zerbrechlichen und alltäglichen Materialien konstruiert.
Folkert De Jong wurde 1972 in Alkmaar/Holland geboren. Er studierte an der Rijks Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Amsterdam und belegte 2003 den dritten Platz des Prix de Rome für Skulptur in Holland.
