Baselitz on paper

18 Sep - 16 Nov 2008

In 2008 the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich is to receive from a private collector one of the most comprehensive collections of prints by Georg Baselitz. The focus here is on the early etchings and woodcuts of the 1960s and 1970s and in particular on trial prints and unique items. Like no other artist in that period Baselitz experimented with techniques and in doing so created prints that stand as independent works alongside his paintings. No matter how provocatively rough and ready these early pictures may seem, they nevertheless demonstrate Baselitz's immense knowledge of the history of art, above all prints of the Renaissance period, and his equally sensitive and creative approach to the particular possibilities of print processes.

The exhibition will first go on show in the Kupferstichkabinett (copperplate engravings cabinet) Dresden and will be accompanied by a catalogue.
