A Retrospective

The first retrospective of the American Dan Flavin - currently being prepared in collaboration with the Dia Art Foundation, New York, - will show over a 100 pieces of work from all the different stages of his artistic career: from the early »Icons« to the room-capturing light installations and drawings. In the context of this overview, the emphasis will be on the reconstruction of works that Dan Flavin conceived for Munich. It was here the artist held important exhibitions in 1968, 1970 and 1976 in the Galerie Heiner Friedrich - exhibitions that proved to be of great significance for Flavins further development.
The last five years have seen the Pinakothek der Moderne acquire major room installations by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Fred Sandback, making it now one of the leading locations for American Minimal Art in the world. Against the background of the collection structure and given the museum's future policy on acquisitions, this exhibition carries particular weight. As well as presenting a comprehensive overview of the works of an important artist; it demonstrates how the forward-looking policies of a Munich gallery proved to be so sustainable in terms of promoting what was a primarily New York based Minimal Movement.
