In her films and photographs the artist - born 1957 in Iran but now living in the USA - treats the subject of political and social issues in countries governed by Islam. Although closely linked to the Islamic culture, she is in a position to adopt an outside view that allows for far greater impartiality in dealing with her impressions and experience. Her video installation »Possessed« from the year 2001 shows a Moslem woman breaking out of the strict code of conduct imposed upon her by a traditionalist society. The only possibility for the woman to escape the narrow confines of this social order appears to lie in her »possessed « state of mind - as an openly provocative way of being different.
