MIRCEA FLORIAN
Learning and Unlearning #4
12 March – 19 March 2016
The program Learning and Unlearning is an initiative of Plan B Cluj, intended to present the practice of important Romanian artists in the framework of a workshop based on the idea of changing the context in which students usually work. In this fashion the latter are challenged to reconsider learned information and to reflect on new creative and critical approaches.
The Înecați_Panta Rhei workshop addresses students and young people interested in exploring interdisciplinary art practices, in working with sound and image, and in improvising together with Mircea Florian, the teacher invited to this fourth Learning and Unlearning workshop.
In this workshop led by musician and artist Mircea Florian (aka DadaFlux), participants will contribute to devising and implementing a kinetic installation (archaic and hi-tech at the same time). The workshop involves a collaboration between participants in view of constructing an "installation with anthropomorphic elements and imperturbable strange objects, being lowered and raised from their wet hiding places by the force of fluids flowing through a network of anarchic tubes, jets and channels (in addition, the network is controlled by cybernetic systems)” as Mircea Florian described this project.
Mircea Florian is an author, musician and visual artist, known primarily for his experimental work which combines his fascination for archaic (musical) instruments with his interest in digital technology. He started playing various musical styles early on, has gained public attention as musician also under the stage name Florian from Transylvania, he composed music for theater and film, worked with highly
different media and participated as an artist in exhibitions such as: SoundScapes, curator Martha Wilson, at Franklin Furnace Gallery NY (1979), Alberti’s Open Window / Windows 98 – Open, curated by Horea Avram, the Venice Biennale (1999), Buchstäblich (Literal), curated by Ana Birthaelmer, at Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal / Germany (1991) and When History Comes Knocking: Romanian Art from the 80s and 90s in Close Up, curated by Judit Angel, at Plan B Berlin (2011).
This event is part of the project Hotspot.art - Contemporary Art and Culture for Communities, funded by a grant offered by Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Romanian Government and run by the Paintbrush Factory.
