On display in the showroom on the ground floor of the gallery are the works of two young artists. The photographs of the Chinese artist Chen Wei, born in 1980, are staged depictions of dark, mysterious and disquieting interiors. The viewer is confronted by rooms that are always deserted, mostly doorless. They are nightmarish scenes that evoke feelings of anxiety, the kind of feelings that are inevitably accompanied by a racing pulse, breathlessness and claustrophobia. In “A Rat’s Post Office”, the anonymous writer of countless unsent letters seems to have escaped this nightmare. Chen Wei’s photographs are staged scenes of destruction and desecration, worlds from which their inhabitants have fled in desperation. Chen Wei lives and works in Hangzhou, China. The presentation at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery is the first showing of his photographs in Germany.
