MEMORIA DE LA DIVERSIDAD
[Expediente I/B]
18 July - 12 October 2014

Curator: Xabier Sáenz de Gorbea

Sala Rekalde presents the exhibition Memoria de la diversidad. Expediente I/B (Record of diversity. File I/B) formed by works from the private collection Ipiña-Bidaurrazaga. For many years, this couple from Bizkaia have been the keepers of a most singular contemporary Basque art collection, from which a sample of 89 pieces is now to be shown to the public, under the aegis of Xabier Sáenz de Gorbea.

Memoria de la diversidad shows that private collections tend to be of mixed content and are not always homogeneous, even when there is a resolute intention to make them follow very specific criteria. The economic circumstances and opportunities offered by the market have to be taken into account, for they determine which works are more accessible and affordable than others. What drove Ipiña and Bidaurrazaga to engage in the undertaking was a desire to appreciate and come to grips with Basque art that was being produced in parallel with their own journey as people. In this mission they spared no effort, in a process of constant tracking and intense selection which led them to observe material on show in all sorts of spaces. Their tenacious monitoring of the local scene reached a point where they had built such a profuse corpus of works that, in 2010, they deposited fifty-three pieces at Artium, the Basque Museum-Centre of Contemporary Art in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Afterwards came showings of the collection, like the one that was held in the Villa Ducontenia in San Juan de Luz in 2011. They have never rejected a request to share what they have. And their works have been present in exhibitions at well-established venues including the Foundations of the BBVA in Bilbao and Vital Kutxa in Vitoria, the Museum of Navarre in Pamplona, Centro de Arte y Naturaleza in Huesca, Kubo Kutxa del Kursaal and Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea in Donostia, Museo Euskal Herria in Gernika, Museo de las Encartaciones in Sopuerta and Sala Rekalde and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao.

The collection has many facets and contrasting perspectives to offer. There are the works they acquired when all this started; those that allude to more traditional art; and works that reflect their interest in Bizkayan art in a process of renewal. Then the circles get wider. They aim to cover what is most representative of what the different territories offer, taking in drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos and documentations from the most important authors. Through them, an understanding emerges of artistic attitudes and approaches over the last fifty years. From the 1960s to the present day. With this breadth of diversity, there are a host of different possible itineraries and many shows of diverse content could be devised. This is one of them.
