TO THOSE WHO HAVE EYES TO SEE

Andrea Geyer’s site-specific installation brings to light the history of American women as champions of modern art via the enduring legacy of Grace McCann Morley, SFMOMA’s director from the museum’s founding in 1935 until 1958. Morley was a tireless advocate for the Bay Area’s burgeoning art ecosystem, supporting artists of all backgrounds and fostering broad public engagement with their work. She was also a champion of cultural and artistic exchange nationally and internationally. To Those Who Have Eyes To See celebrates diverse narratives, including the modern histories of both exhibition design and LGBTQ communities, and Morley’s conviction that art and museums are not luxuries or pastimes but fundamental necessities. Contextualizing Morley within a larger network of underrepresented individuals whose creative, social, and political impact defined American Modernism, Geyer raises vital questions about identity, community, representation, and visibility in contemporary museums.
