DREHMOMENTE
Films by Dieter Roth
9 July 2008 – 5 October 2008

The focus of this exhibition is on experimental film works realised by the Swiss artist, Dieter Roth (1930-1998), who was born in Hanover. Among these are films shot during the 1950s and 1960s in both Reykjavík and Copenhagen, such as “Pop 1”, “Dock 1 + 2”, “Letter” and “Dot”. The unusual aesthetic of his use of movement and light, combined with word-play and manipulation of the film material itself resulted in ground-breaking art. In “Dot”, for example, Roth used a simple leather pincer to punch holes directly in the film material. Through the use of rapid alternations of images and double exposures, Roth provokes the viewer.

These films will be juxtaposed with examples of the artist's work in other media from the 1950s into the 1970s, including kinetic objects and assemblages of various materials; these also induce optical irritation when observed. In this manner, the conceptual, aesthetic and formal relationships between his films and other visual creations can be perceived as a consequent development of the notion of representing virtual movement.

The exhibition has been made possible with funding from Ahlers pro Arte.
