Inaugurating the Open Archive gallery, artist Paul Noble (born 1963) brings together a diverse and surprising selection of artworks. They form a symbolic account of the history of the Millbank area and the early development of the Tate Gallery. The works range from fluid, organic forms that evoke the original swampy site, to grids and rigid structures referring to the prison that preceded the Tate Gallery, without of course omitting a reference to Tate’s benefactors.
The Open Archive is a new gallery dedicated to Tate’s Archive collections. This display launches it in an unexpected way.
