MARKUS AMM
"New Works"
THE BREEDER is pleased to present the new body of work by London based, German artist Markus Amm.
Perhaps it is advisable not to enter the struggle of clearly distinguishing between the various genres, historical ideas, styles and techniques, at least not when it comes to considering the works of Markus Amm. The relationship to early 20th century Modernist movements is all too obvious.
However, Amm can continue working on the tradition of modernist art, on the inconsistencies and loose ends, and, devoid of any pathos for progress, exploring afresh-Utopian life models. His approach may be conceptual, but it is not strategic in the sense of a masterful intellectual exercise.
In his work, the core composition is the result of elementary shapes such as circles, triangles and rectangles, intertwined with parallel and crossing lines, which in turn fragment and splinter these very shapes. In comparison, his meticulous choices on colour and treatment of the surfaces are significantly varied between the works.
Markus Amm exhibited with THE BREEDER for the first time in the group show entitled New Party in2004. Recent and forthcoming solo exhibitions include: Galerie Guenther Borgmann, Hamburg, David Kordansky Gallery, LA, 2006; HeraldStreet, 2005. Amongst others he has participated in: Alles In Einer Nacht, Tanya Bonaktar, New York, The Addiction, Gagosian Gallery, Berlin, 2005; Formalismus-Moderne Kunst Heute, Kunstverein Hamburg, 2004; EAST, Norwich Gallery, Norwich, 2003; Manifesta, Frankfurt, 2002
