ARTURO HERRERA

Arturo Herrera's works probe the language of abstraction through fragmentation. The artist presents a non-linear narrative referencing pop culture to modernism to create works that hover between the explicit and the implicit.

For this first exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery, Herrera will present large felt pieces and paper on canvas collages. Unlike the heavily incised felts made by the artist between 1998 and 2003 which suggest painterly drip paintings, the new works rely exclusively on abstract shapes cut from wool felt. The new series of works on paper sees Herrera incorporate his own acrylic paintings on canvas, restricting himself to one or two paper fragments to create collages addressing the impurity of abstraction.

Arturo Herrera was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He lives and works in Berlin and New York. Herrera's work, rich in references, interweaves elements from art history and everyday culture. His multilayered body of work includes photographs, collages, painted wood and steel sculptures felt pieces and site -specific wall paintings. Herrera's solo and project-based exhibitions have been held at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; daadgalerie, Berlin; ICA Philadelphia; The UCLA Hammer Museum, LA; Art Gallery of Ontario; The Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago; Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; and the Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva, Switzerland.

Currently Herrera has a double exhibition at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge. A catalogue is available.
