Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo show of Adrian Ghenie (°1977 Baia-Mare, Romania) in Belgium.
Witnessing the disintegration of ideologies from a peripheral view (growing up in Romania under a communist dictatorship), Ghenie's paintings try to be a mirror of our collective memory which is suffocated after decades of intense bombardment with propaganda cliches. A strange echo haunts our public consciousness and shapes our perception over history.
The whole idea behind this show is to suggest a movement, to insert time in these paintings as a fourth dimension. Each painting depicts a metamorphosis: people, situations or objects suffer a transformation, evolving from one stage to another and not necessarily in a logical sequence. Something tragic and imminent floats inside these images. A group of people forced to move, a guy jumping from a building, an iconic mummy getting mouldy or a burned piece of furniture create altogether a sort of lens which invites the viewer to have a voyeuristic moment, to have a look at the dark side of history and to discover eventually the source of the tragedy.
Adrian Ghenie has recently shown in "Expanded Painting", Prague Bienale, in group shows at David Nolan Gallery, New York, the Hudson Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill/New York, Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Munich, Kontainer Gallery, Los Angeles and Galerie Hussenot, Paris and a solo show at Haunch of Venison, Zürich and Plan B Gallery,Cluj
