There are things that elude representation: a document from 1907 that was an attempt to patent a magic trick, missed its aim. Because with the revelation of the trick, all the magic disappeared.

“To bring something to light, reveal the truth, explicate, clarify”. This vocabulary stems from the logic of the Enlightenment. It dominates to this day and is securely established in our everyday speech. Light, truth, knowledge, and visibility are equated. But what happens when something eludes our gaze? Is it then merely “hidden”? What if it could not be “dehidden” in the first place? What happens in the world beyond the visible?

The exhibition at Galerie Jan Wentrup shows eight artists who in their work deal with things that cannot be brought to light. They are works whose object is sublated and disappears in the representation, and yet in its fleetingness it is highly effective.
