ISELF COLLECTION: THE END OF LOVE
30 August – 26 November 2017

In 2012, Akram Zaatari (b. 1966, Lebanon) brought together a collection of 48 portraits, including brides and grooms, taken by Hashem el Madani in the 1960s–70s at the Studio Shehrazade in Lebanon in The End of Love (2012). Lending its name to the title of the show, these images mark an important moment of transition in family lives but also of the private image into the social archive.

Contemporary portraiture – both real and imagined – and the relationship between self and other, or between artist, sitter and viewer, is further explored by nearly 30 international artists alongside Zaatari in this display.

Also featuring works by Ida Applebroog, Fiona Banner, Michaël Borremans, Bill Brandt, Brassaï, Don Brown, Gillian Carnegie, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Chantal Joffe, Rashid Johnson, Alex Katz, Mary Kelly, Leon Kossoff, Jim Lambie, Maria Lassnig, Alice Neel, R. H. Quaytman, Man Ray, Wilhelm Sasnal, Catherine Story, Fiona Tan, Wolfgang Tillmans, Luc Tuymans, Paloma Varga Weisz and Gillian Wearing.

Continuing the Whitechapel Gallery’s programme of opening up rarely seen collections from around the world, this is the second of four exhibitions drawn from the ISelf Collection.
