FLORE NOVÉ-JOSSERAND
19 March – 19 April 2015
For Invites Nové-Josserand is producing a sculptural installation that will expand out from a series of photographic prints. These images begin as three-dimensional sets, staged within the artist's studio and the surrounding streets of Streatham, South London. Emphasising floating flat planes of colour and pattern, the images also contain mysterious totem-like objects and hands that seem to point or instruct. The photographs are outputted like posters, and while suggestive of flat screens of digital information remain resolutely handmade in their physical layering.
Using imagery and materials that reference fencing, shutters and boarded up windows Nové-Josserand combines aspects of the 'rough geometry' of a city. Her interest is in both the visual rhythms of the urban environment, and the impact of gentrification on a city and its inhabitants. In a process that allows room for improvised solutions, absurdity and humour, Nové-Josserand investigates possible tensions and overlaps between social and aesthetic space, drawing attention to our perception of the objects that surround us on a daily basis, and where and when we look at them.
