The Berlin Photography Festival, brought into being in 2002 by Berlin cultural institutions, provides a network between the various photographic activities in Berlin and carries on the discourse about contemporary international photography by means of the respective issue on which it focuses.

The first Berlin Photography Festival will open on September 23, 2005, in the Martin-Gropius-Bau with a central eight-week exhibition conceived and curated by Jan-Erik Lundström, Director of the Bildmuseet Umeå in Sweden. The topic of the festival for 2005 is “After the Fact”. “At precisely the time when digital technology is descending upon photographic expression, the documentary approach is experiencing a remarkable renaissance in photography.

This exhibition will be sounding out new methods in the documentary and narrative practice at the beginning of this millennium, which fuse together fact and fiction in an artistic and lasting manner. It shows us the strength of global contemporary photography in confrontation with our daily constraints and ongoing crises.” (Jan-Erik Lindström)

Further photographic exhibitions and presentations taking place during the festival in Berlin will be coordinated by Berlin Photography Festival e.V. and published in a folder.

A symposium on the topic of the festival, organized in cooperation with the Humboldt University and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung a variety of lectures, discussions and workshops will complement and further explore the main topic.

In co-operation with the Forum Goethe-Institut a dialogue of European photography magazines will be initiated. For the qualifications and networking purposes a meeting place with curators, editors, gallery owners and publishers will be offered for up-and-coming photographers.
