We are pleased to welcome you to ‘Stellar Pleasure’, Tamara Van San’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Alongside we have invited Audrey Cottin, a transdisciplinary artist steadily seeking for interesting collaborations with others. For her exhibition ‘Double Solo’, she has invited gallery artists and assistants to work with her. This collaboration results in a performative setting including amongst others an active painting and a photography series of lifting works.
During the past years Tamara Van San mainly worked with materials such as polyurethane, nylon, plaster, iron and ceramics. For ‘Stellar Pleasure’ Van San has used pigmented resins for the first time. The title of the exhibition refers to the wondrous graphic appearances found in the universe (as a child, Van San wanted to become an astronaut) and the magnificent plants and animals she meets while scuba diving. The main idea behind these works is the incessant search for new forms, techniques and materials that makes this kind of experience of the sublime or the poetic possible. For the first time her sculptures appear in the form of some sort of paintings, oscillating through the space as mirrors of our soul.
Van San feels connected with artists such as Eva Hesse, Eva Rotschild, Louise Bourgeois, Katherine Grosse, Karla Black, Katinka Bock, Jeff Koons, who surround their works with the necessary stories, without trying to justify them with deep theories. The works have to touch or affect you and tell you something about the position Van San takes in this world. How she looks at it. What she wants to contribute to it. How she believes that there is something odd and dark about beauty, something we want to put aside while taking it with us. No more, no less.

Tamara Van San (1982, BE) lives & works in Appelterre (BE). She has taken part in various group shows, at amongst others Netwerk, Aalst (BE), Mu.ZEE, Ostend (BE) and Lokaal01, Breda (NL). Solo exhibitions include: ‘We’ve Plumbed This Whole Neighbourhood’ (duo), Lido, St Leonards On Sea (UK), S.M.A.K., Ghent (BE), ‘Beautiful Boys’, CC België, Hasselt (BE), ‘The Wandering Tuba Method’, S.M.A.K., Ghent (BE), EKWC, ‘s Hertogenbosch (NL), ‘The Motley Crew’, Middelheimmuseum, Antwerp (BE).
