Apple. An Introduction
Over and Over and Once Again
27 June – 25 October 2015
A project on apples initiated by artists Antje Majewski and Paweł Freisler as a case study on biodiversity. Both cover the mechanisms behind the genetic reduction of this fruit to make present the example of the apple as a complex relationship between global food economy and technological progress, thereby referring both to science and to the standards of a capitalist world-economy. The exhibition at Museum Abteiberg shows works by Majewski and Freisler as well as further objects by Jimmie Durham, Agnieszka Polska, Piotr Życieński, and other international colleagues.
Simultaneously, as phase 2.2. in the long-term outdoor project AN INNOCENT DREAM OF A PARK, the exhibition expands to an environmental project for the city which will be implemented from summer to autumn 2015 together with residents of Mönchengladbach. The neighbours of Museum Abteiberg, the VHS, the grammar school, and the Youth Center JUKOMM / STEP on Hans Jonas Park, are participants as well as activists of the local garden initiatives. The Polish ecologists initiative, Fundacja Transformacja, will organize workshops for planting and reclamation of fruit and crop, investigating new mappings of common land, ideas for new orchards and memories of historical backgrounds e.g. the apple and meditation garden on the Abteiberg hill.
