TELL IT TO THE STONES
The Work of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub
14 September — 19 November 2017

In a collaboration that spanned nearly 50 years, the filmmaker duo Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub created one of the most influential and controversial oeuvres in modern cinema. They once described their position and method as “the luxury that you gain when you have nothing to lose” – a wealth intended to become something belonging to everyone through their films.

The exhibition, which treats the highly detailed, handcrafted working processes of the filmmakers, and also shows newly created artistic positions by international artists, forms the context and resonating space for an extensive programme.

In a complete retrospective, Huillet/Straub’s films will be screened at four venues in Berlin from 15 Oct to 5 Nov. During two Rencontres at the beginning and end of the cycle, numerous guests delve into the multifaceted dimensions of this oeuvre and its contemporary significance. The filmmakers’ productive interest in Arnold Schönberg will be addressed from 7 to 14 Oct, and also reapproached musically through the reworking of a Schönberg composition.

The exhibition is funded by the Capital Cultural Fund and supported by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, ifa)
