Two exhibitions of works by Rita McBride will open in May 2012. Rita McBride is an artist working with the language of sculpture. Her work over the last 25 years has yielded a multitude of projects and objects that are as surprising as they are provocative.
Maverick, a selection of works from 2009 – 2011 will be presented at Alexander and Bonin. The exhibition includes a number of works related to McBride’s public sculpture, Mae West. This 170-foot high, 57-ton rotational parabola is one the largest sculptures in the world and the first of its kind to be built of carbon fiber. It was recently installed on the Effnerplatz in Munich, a permanent commission of Munich’s public art program. Works inspired by Mae West at Alexander and Bonin include colorful wool tapestries woven in Oaxaca, Out West Wagon Wheels constructed of wood and vintage Italian Abet laminate, and a bronze Mae West sculpture cast from willow branches. Installed with these works will be a series of recent bronze parking structures, a prominent theme in McBride’s work since the late 1980s, and Vent, a facsimile of a parking structure ventilation tower constructed of wood and laminate.
Oferta Pública/Public Tender, a solo exhibition at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) will present highlights of her sculptures that have been chosen for their specific ability to raise questions that address public production and perception of culture. While some works directly reintroduce found forms from our built world with unexpected materials and dimensions, others are more directly derived from design and architecture. Oferta Pública/Public Tender will be on view May 19 – September 24. The exhibition is curated by Bartomeu Marí and a publication with essays by Marí, Louis Fernández-Galiano, Anne Pöhlmann, and Mark Wigley will be available.
