Andréhn-Schiptjenko takes great pleasure in presenting Pilar Albarracín, Mika Rottenberg and Mickalene Thomas. With the exception of Pilar Albarracín, shown in Here comes the sun at Magasin 3 in 2005, the exhibition is the first introduction of these artists’ work to the Swedish audience. While distinctly different, all three artist address issues of identity, stereotypes and cultural expectations.
Pilar Albarracín, born in 1968 in Andalusia and currently living in Madrid, explores issues of cultural heritage and identity, tapping into idiosyncrasies such as flamenco, cooking, religious beliefs and popular ”ferias”. Drawing from social stereotypes, she challenges traditions and behaviours. With irony and wit she brings gender roles and attitudes into focus. Albarracín recently had a major solo exhibition at the Maison Rouge in Paris and has been seen in numerous group shows, including Always a little further, Arsenale de Venezia, curated by Rosa Martínez in 2005.
Mika Rottenberg envisions the female body as a microcosm of larger societal issues such as labour and class inequities. Working with drawings, photos and video installations she has established her own unique, narrative approach, in which action often is compressed into layers of illogical activity. Recent group shows include The Whitney Biennial 2008, Greater New York (2005) at P.S.1 and Uncertain States of America at Astrup Fernley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo (2005) and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2006). In 2006 she became the first recipient of the Cartier Award. Based in New York, Mika Rottenberg was born in Argentina in 1976, and raised in Israel.
Mickalene Thomas, born 1971 in Camden New Jersey and currently living an working in Brooklyn, works with a nostalgia-infused investigation of representations of black female sexuality, playing on a Blaxploitation-style foxiness fraught with complexity. Derived from contemporary culture and personal memories alike, she works in both photography and painting. Her process is performance related as she stages her photographic sets and the paintings are, spectacularly ornamented with Swarowski crystals and acrylic rhinestones, bringing the bling of pop culture into a pictorial universe referencing an array of historical and contemporary imagery. Thomas earned her MFA at Yale and currently has a solo-exhibition at the Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago and will exhibit at the Lehmann Maupin gallery in New York in the spring of 2009.
