Andréhn-Schiptjenko proudly presents Julie Roberts’ fourth solo show at the gallery. The opening takes place on October 2, 5-8 pm in the presence of the artist. The exhibition runs through November 8, 2014.
Since the early 90ies, when she participated in Aperto at Venice Biennale, Julie Roberts has been noticed for her individual and technically complex painting. Investigating archival material, her subject matter has been the exploration of power and the exposed, such as women whose bodies have been restricted through for example medicine and psychiatry and children, whose early years were characterized by turbulence and insecurity brought on by war or family circumstances.
In recent years, she has worked with a series of paintings, drawings and watercolours based on archival photographs of children who were evacuated or placed in foster care during the Second World War. Children’s Army was a concept in Great Britain where children were counted on to be brave soldiers and pull their weight. They were expected to accept being evacuated and to serve as, for instance, fire fighters. Though Julie Roberts’ very stylized paintings depict specific children highly affected by the great and overthrowing events of the 20th century, they emerge as universal representations of the abandoned child, a heroic survivor in a violent and hard world, a reality also in our days.
Born in 1964, Julie Roberts studied at Glasgow School of Art at the same time as Douglas Gordon and was a part of the group of artists known as the YBA, with Damien Hirst as the leading figure.
Julie Roberts’ work was recently shown in a major solo show at The Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is currently on display in Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall’s exhibition The Drawing Room, running through December 14, 2014.
Her work is included in a large number of public collections, such as The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Stockholm, Indianapolis Art Museum, Indiana, The Tate Gallery, London, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, The National Museums and Galleries of Wales, Cardiff, Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris, and Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Oporto, Portugal.
