We are proud to present Martin Jacobson’s second solo show at the gallery. The opening takes place in presence of the artist on Thursday October 7, 5-8 pm.
Martin Jacobson (b. 1978) graduated from The Art Academy of Malmö, Sweden in 2005. His drawings and objects have received attention from curators and collectors alike and he received the prestigious Edstrandska Award in 2009. In the same year he was shown in the Venice Biennial’s Danish Pavilion’s exhibition The Collectors, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset. His work has also recently been shown in the exhibition The Beauty of Distance, curated by David Elliott at the 17th Biennale of Sydney. He is currently on view in the exhibition Nordic Delight, at Institut Culturel Suèdois in Paris, curated by Sinziana Ravini.
As in his previous works, Jacobson’s new paintings are based upon his own collages. These collages are assembled from images he finds at fleamarkets and antiquarians and selected according to Jacobson’s fascination for myths. He has searched on the scrapheap of the history of art, looking for book-illustrations, postcards and motifs typical of the late 19th century, especially mythological female figures. What he has been looking for are the images that reflect our collective myths and dreams, the birth of modernity, the childhood of our time. However, this imagery goes further aback, towards antiquity where Artemis and Apollo are recurrent sources of inspiration. By using only the four primary colours Jacobson creates effects similar to those of a theatre stage, further underlining the staged quality of these motifs. The mythological females are familiar in their representation but we are simultaneously allowed to recognise them from a distance and reflect upon how these constructs are channelled into our time.
In conjunction to the exhibition there is a small publication with texts by Charlotta Nordström and Martin Jacobson.
