Self Portrait With Fish
17 January - 15 February 2014

n Andrew Kreps Gallery 535 West 22nd Street space, Polish artist Honza Zamojski (re) presents an exhibition as self-portrait, both literally and metaphorically. A room-sized figurative sculpture pushes and distends its way into the gallery’s main exhibition space, while a small selection of ichthyological drawings hang in the offices, creating an ecosystem inhabited by fish, fishing and bliss. The sculpture, as self-portrait, performs a triple action: measuring the space, indicating the size of the catch and displaying an erection. The passion for angling is, at one and the same time, a metaphor for a love of art and for an escape from it.
A version of this exhibition was previously shown at Galeria Foksal, Warsaw, Poland accompanied by a catalog entitled Fishing With John.
Honza Zamojski's work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Arsenal Gallery, Bialystock, Poland; LETO Gallery, Warsaw, Poland; Cleopatra's, Brooklyn, New York; and Kim?, Riga, Latvia.
