Annely Juda Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Lesley Foxcroft in a solo show in the third level galleries.
The works are created in MDF, each consisting of four elements, or a multiple thereof. Foxcroft’s use of this ordinary product, made from the deconstruction of different kinds of wood and fibres, rather than, for example, steel, bronze or marble, is an integral part of her expression as a whole: “I like the idea that the uncomplicated has a purpose: that the material does not give a sculpture its value, it is the artist that does”.
Foxcroft renders this hard-edged material into pure delicate forms, resulting in ascetic and ethereal sculptures. The works can be seen as both structure and adornment within the gallery space, yet they are neither. Buttressed against floor and wall, they have a force and a permanence, which are reminiscent of the power exuded by the structural elements of architectural ruins.
The viewer experiences the works within the space, rather than confronts them. Simple, poised and silent, they provide an interesting conversation with the robust forms in the concurrent show by David Nash in the 4th floor galleries.
Lesley Foxcroft studied at Camberwell School of Fine Art and has had numerous solo and group shows throughout the UK and Europe from 1974 onwards. Her previous solo show with Annely Juda Fine Art, Combination, was exhibited in 2004.
