You were born as a boy or a girl, and your passport says if you are male or female. There are no other possibilities. But what kind of man or woman are you and what has shaped your way of belonging to either gender? How do you show it?
The Frida Kahlo exhibition inspired us to present works from ARKEN’s collection that show artists playing around with gender and its codes, putting self-representation, the gaze of others, beauty ideals and challenges to gender conventions into play. The exhibition also includes three works on loan that relate to Kahlo’s staged self-portraits.
The participating artists from ARKEN's Colleaction are: Elina Brotherus (FI), Nancy Burson (US), Marlene Dumas (ZA), Elmgreen & Dragset (DK/NO), Stella Hamberg (DE), Mona Hatoum (GB/PS), Jesper Just (DK), Peter Land (DK), Jouko Lehtola (FI), Sarah Lucas (GB), Elina Merenmies (FI), Shirin Neshat (IR), Tim Noble & Sue Webster (GB), Julie Nord (DK), Grayson Perry (GB), Torbjørn Rødland (NO), Erik Steffensen (DK), Lene Stæhr (DK), Vibeke Tandberg (NO), Pascale Marthine Tayou (CM) and Wolfgang Tillmans (DE).
Furthermore, the exhibition presents three works that relate to the Kahlo's self portraits: The video Work Dialogue with Myself (Encounter) (2001) by Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura and two portraits of Frida Kahlo drawn by British artist Sue Webster.
