Exhibition 17th March – 14th April 2007
Opening reception saturday March 17th from 4:00 to 9.00 PM.
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1974, the artist currently lives and works in Paris.
This is the artist’s first solo show in Paris. This exhibition will feature the screening of her first film made in Paris, where she has made her home.
Working in a variety of media including film, watercolour on tissue paper, drawing, wall painting, installation, notebook ‘magazines’ and performance, Ulla von Brandenburg invokes multiple references and contexts to create tensions that reveal underlying currents and offer enigmatic new perspectives. Her works are heavy laden with motifs from the occult, circus symbolism, early twentieth century parapsychology, commedia dell’arte props (masks particularly play an important role) ; often they feature female figures, portrayed as mediators between this world and the next, just as the works themselves connect the historical and the present, the elusive and the familiar, reason and madness.
By building up layers of possible perception, and by the visible careful positioning of elements – notably in the tableaux vivants which characterise her films – and holding the accumulation together in a seemingly static moment, she succeeds in altering the cultural implications of image, language and representation. The viewer is deliberately disorientated by optical illusions and confronted by challenging works which aim at ambiguity and result in mystery.
The artist has previously had solo shows in her native Germany, in Montreal, Canada, and at the Zurich Kunsthalle in Switzerland. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in Germany, London, Paris, Miami, Italy and New York. Her projects this year include a solo show at Hamburg’s Produzentengalerie, and exhibitions at Foxy Production, New York ; attitudes, Geneva ; The Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol ; and CerealArt, Philadelphia.
