"Simplicity and harmony"

The early works 1928 to 1949
An exhibition on his 100th Birthday
Upper Belvedere

24 April to 23 July 2007

15 stone sculptures, 10 bronzes and clay models, drawings and water colours, mostly studies for the sculpted stone and other sculptural works provide insight into the oeuvre of one of the most important Austrian sculptors of the twentieth century.
Fritz Wotruba, a student of Anton Hanak, very much focused his work on the human figure; the oeuvre is also remarkable for its variations on elaborate theme complexes. The show in the Upper Belvedere includes the archetype of the torsos, also heads, and reclining or seated figures. The works in the exhibition come from the Belvedere holdings, the Wotruba Association, also from private collections, and have been selected to present a view of Wotruba’s major work groups.
