Alessandro Twombly’s sculptures are metamorphous forms that bridge the intangible gap between abstraction and archaic representation. Flickering with shadows, hollows and swells, their surfaces are reminiscent of fossilized rocks and sea dwelling animal-plants. The coral-like forms oscillate between stiffness and motion. Organic shapes that appear to sprout from the massif offset the hardness of the bronze, resulting in the vibrant openness of something in progress.
The sculptures are complemented by recent works in which primitive cnidarians or limbed animals gradually dissolve into abstract form. Themes of origin and transformation are continued in largeformat, abstract paintings of subtly colored layers of impasto. Swirling eddies and short up-anddown strokes give the painting a sculptural quality. The paint runs and blends but does not result in a chaotic jumble of lines; rather, its direction of motion is clear and harmonious. There is nothing static about these works. Their dynamic flow refers back to the essence of Twombly’s work: the ability to experience the act of becoming in terms of processes and changeability.
Alessandro Twombly has had numerous solo and group shows in New York, Buenos Aires and in European art centers such as Rome, Barcelona, Brussels, Milan, Geneva, and Basel. After two solo exhibitions at the Galerie Aurel Scheibler in Cologne, this is the Italian artistʼs first show at Aurel Scheibler in Berlin.
